A front page article in this morning’s Denver Post revealed that O’Donnell while head of CCHE received the trip to Panama paid for by KCNC-Channel 4, after CCHE purchased television ads from that station. O’Donnell claimed that he vacationed in Panama “in my official capacity as the head of higher education.” (DP, October 12, 2006)
On January 10, 2006, O’Donnell issued a press release entitled “O’Donnell Issues Sweeping Proposal for Congressional Ethics Reform” in which he stated that he wished to “ban corporations” from “paying for travel expenses” as “too often these trips become all-expense-paid vacations” and “another way to peddle influence.”
This was not the first time O’Donnell has been exposed for misusing his office. As head of the Department of Regulatory Agencies, O’Donnell took contributions from companies he was regulating including Xcel Energy and Qwest to pay off his debt he accrued from his losing run for Congress in 2002. (Rocky Mountain News, April 19, 2006)
We call on O'Donnell to pay back this money to his former department.
